Summary on Grant Application Form
We will investigate the mechanisms which will lead to exceptional strength in SiC/alumina nanocomposites after simple coarse grinding and annealing. A number of potential mechanisms for strengthening have been identified and these will be tested by experiment. To achieve this we will use a range of techniques including transmission electron microscopy to characterise sub-surface dislocations, acoustic microscopy and Hertzian indentation to characterise surface defect densities and both X-ray diffraction and Hertzian indentation to characterise surface residual stress states. The influence of annealing time, temperature and oxygen partial pressure during annealing will be studied and results presented in a mapping format across this parameter space. We will also determine whether SiC/alumina nanocomposites show crack healing after service by annealing and whether this could be used as an in-service recovery treatment. Finally we will investigate the possibility of SiC nanocomposite strengthening in zirconia matrices.
