One of the most important challenges facing system designers is to build systems that are secure and reliable out of components that are less so. Early attempts at this have relied on using voting protocols to construct process groups: however these are liable to common mode failures. We will explore an alternative approach based on combining functional separation of duties with strict mechanisms for local failure containment. This will involve the construction of a prototype electronic publishing system which will be resilient in the face of successful attacks on any one of its component servers. This system will be able to host all sorts of content on which reliance is placed, ranging from human readable information such as drug data to objects used by systems such as public key certificates.
