Summary on Grant Application Form
The core methodology for this proposal lies in the significant expertise in hydraulic modelling of two stage channel flow in the Departments of Geography (numerical modelling) and Civil Engineering (physical scale modelling and data processing) at the University of Bristol. It comprises the linkage of these model platforms to develop a river engineering design tool. Specifically a newly developed advanced two dimensional finite element hydraulic model will be validated against unique physical model and filed data sets to produce a code capable of robust prediction. This data set will then be used to upgrade the model to overcome two identified constraints that currently prevent the development of an industrial standard model-based tool for river engineering design. This latter product will be of major benefit to UK industry due to the flexibility of the finite element modelling technique which allows alternative designs to be quickly assessed and compared.
