Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will develop techniques for improving access to computer-based information. In particular, it will investigate the use of virtual environments as a means of placing information retrieved from a content specific (similarity) search in better context. The example used, for empirical studies, will be a database of psychology journal abstracts. Using algorithms based on document content similarity (word frequencies/proximity's), semantic information will be 'mapped' to spatial dimensions, and documents positioned within a virtual 'information space'. The relative merits of one-, two- and three-dimensional structures will be assessed. Given that cognitive demands are greater when navigating higher dimensional spaces, the project will develop estimates of the amount of additional semantic variance that must be accounted for by an additional spatial dimension before its inclusion becomes worthwhile. The influence of individual differences in domain knowledge, associative memory ability and spatial ability will be examined.
