During the last year Dr Cinal has reformulated the calculation of interface MA in real space using the recursion method. He has checked it against k-space calculations for a simple case. The next stage is to apply the new method to calculate the uniaxial in-plane anistropy associated with a single step on a (001) fcc Co surface. We shall then consider decoration of the steps withCu and try to understand the observed 90o rotation of easy axis. We shall study thicker Cu overlayers on various (001) and (110) Co surfaces, using k-space methods for perfect surfaces, and look for effects of quantum well states in MA.Finally we will investigate MA for more random interfacial roughness using the recursion method.
