Summary on Grant Application Form
The essential core of this project is the monitoring and modelling of river floods at the field scale, at four sites in the UK looking specifically at overbank flows. The work follows directly from the ESPRC Flood Channels programme centred at the FCF, HR Wallingford. The programme will collect extensive field data at all sites with a view to comparing with Flood Channel Facility data and for comparing with three-dimensional numerical models, as well as with a tow-dimensional floodplain inundation fuzzy rules model. This will be a cross-disciplinary team effort with the flood monitoring rapid response team based in Lancaster and the numerical modeling part centred in Glasgow. The work will also benefit from practical support from HR Wallingford. The results of the work will establish scaling rules from model to field for overbank flows, will produce industry standard software for modelling such flows and will also provide guidelines of floodplain behavior, vegetation and topography.
