Summary on Grant Application Form
Semi-solid metal processing (SSM) is a hybrid manufacturing method that incorporates elements of both casting and forging. It offers a number of advantages over the conventional casting and forging processes, such as refined non-dendritic microstructure and enhanced mechanical properties. This proposal emerges from the juxtaposition of three cognate groups within materials (metal, polymer and ceramic processing) and is a transdisciplinary approach to SSM processing, involving the Department of Materials Engineering, the Wolfson Centre for Materials Processing and 7 industrial collaborators. It aims to develop a new SSM processing technique, rheomoulding, which is a combination of pressure die casting of metallic materials and twin screw extrusion compounding of polymeric materials. It is anticipated that the application of high shear dispersive mixing technique will generate microstructure not hitherto seen. The programme covers; (1) development of a rheomoulding machine, (2) optimisation of the rheomoulding process, (3) rheological study of SSMs, (4) development of specialised Al-alloys for SSM processing, (5) microstructure and property evaluation of rheomoulded components, (6) rheomoulding of MMC components. This application requests only the costs of an RA and related travelling. Other costs for the overall research programme will be met by a separate JREI'97 grant application and industrial contributions.
