Summary on Grant Application Form
This project intents to extend the current state of the art in biomedical signal processing by exploring and developing techniques for the analysis of magnetic fields produced by cortical activity. Measuring brainstate dynamics by magnetic field sensors is a recent innovation only practically realisable in the last decade. Consequently the application of advanced information processing methodologies such as statistical pattern analysis, non-linear signal processing and artificial neural network techniques to biomagnetic processing is in its worldwide infancy. Since it is a very difficult problem domain, almost all signal analysis is currently performed by direct human visual inspection and interpretation. This project intends to explore the possibilities of extracting more information from cortical signals by primarily artificial neural network-motivated tools. In addition to extending the understanding of biomagnetic neural signals, it is likely that the nature of the problem will also necessitate and extension of generic signal and pattern processing techniques.
