Summary on Grant Application Form |
Despite the burgeoning interest in organisational learning and the continuing significance of manufacturing performance there has been little attempt to systematically research the relationship between the two. This research will undertake that by exploring the management of problem solving and innovation, the formalisation and implementation of improvements and the interface between systems, processes and technology in manufacturing in order to establish models of best practice for the learning factory. Additionally the project will identify the sources of knowledge available to manufactures and explore the processes by which external actors such as suppliers and customers contribute to, and benefit from, internal process improvements. In conjunction with this, the research will systematically benchmark manufacturing performance in order to test empirically the relationship between learning and performance. The project will underpin this research through the development of a self-assessment tool for manufacturers to assess their learning structures and processes. Approaches to learning best practices will be disseminated for implementation by UK manufacturers. The proposers will work in conjunction with Lucas Training Centre to develop programmes for dissemination/implementation.
