The proposer's group have developed a generic technology for the construction of highly functional scanned probe microscope sensors integrated with AFM tips. Characteristics of this technology are high lithographic resolution (to 30nm), high aspect ratio tips (20um high probe tips on 200um long cantilevers) multiple levels of lithography (6 demonstrated) batch fabrication and wide range of available materials. Benefits of this approach include simultaneous topographic imaging, high spatial resolution, quantifiable imaging methods and reproducibility of sensor/actuator.This programme is concerned with the use of the technology to develop a number of novel probes and to investigate their utility for the practical investigation of ferromagnetic specimens.e-MFM and Hall probe sensors with integrated force sensing cantilevers allow the quantitative, non-invasive characterisation of magnetic materials. The nature of the probes makes them appropriate for use on magnetically very soft and very hard specimens, in contrast to conventional ferromagnetic MFM probes. Typical application areas might be in spin-valve films or nanocrystalline permanent magnets.Integration of small electromagnet coils with a Hall sensor permits the application of rapid (0.1ns) spatially confined magnetic fields of up to 0.15T. Typical applications are the characterisation of MR heads and the stability of dense magnetic storage media.
