Summary on Grant Application Form
Our new Advanced Microkelvin Refrigerator is now built, tested and ready to start on its first new experiments. It is designed and custom built in Lancaster specifically to provide cooling to the lowest temperatures possible. The proposed programme will aim to exploit the full potential of the new refrigerator. We expect to make progress on three broad fronts:1. To develop new methods of nuclear cooling by inserting a further precooling stage, extending our capabilities with a double demagnetisation process.2. Hence to open up the region of equilibrium temperatures below 10 microkelvin for the study of condensed matter. To extend our existing studies of superfluid 3He to even lower temperatures than at present, entering a region of yet smaller normal fluid density. This pure superfluid is expected to support extremely long-lived coherent states, observed by NMR. In addition a number of new experiments involving ballistic quasiparticles, superfluid phase boundaries and confined geometries will become possible with the even lower background effects expected in the new refrigerator.
