Summary on Grant Application Form
The creation of new constituent materials will permit significant advances in 1-3 piezocomposite transducer technology. The fundamental aspects are addressed, firstly through a combination of theoretical modelling and novel experimental measurement to determine the necessary materials properties. This is followed by manufacture of new passive materials and subsequent evaluation within a range of prototype transducers and array. Important aspects to be considered will be a reduction in material poisson ratio, coupled with high damping to promote efficiency and bandwidth at low volume fractions. New materials containing improved thermal characteristics will be evaluated via novel theoretical and experiemental techniques for high power operation. Major application areas for the new technology include sonar, biomedical imaging and non-destructive testing.
