The puropse of the research is to extend the applicability of gas purification by absorption into solids. Technical difficulties arise because the gas cannot penetrate or diffuse into the solid and because competitive effects may mask the affinity of the solid for the gas. Removal of sulphur dioxide by reaction with solid oxides and hydroxides is the main vehicle for this proposed investigation. However, in numerous environmental problems, an excess of carbon dioxide, which is neither corrosive nor toxic, masks the desired absorption of sulphur dioxide in a competitive reaction. In effect, purification requires separation of sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide. Very important examples of this separation by absorption arise in the purification of stack gases at poewr stations and the retention of sulphur dioxide in car exhaust systems. Less obviously, lowlevels of sulphur dioxide can contaminate or damage by corrosion senstivie objects such as museum artefacts or sensitive electronic components.
