Summary on Grant Application Form
Functionalised cyclodextrins with appended metal binding units will be prepared and used to assemble metal complexes into spatially organised structures by using the cyclodextrin cavities to bind functionalised metal-complex guests. We will elucidate the photochemical properties of the assemblies as smart functional systems for light conversation to useful forms of energy, thus mimicking macroscopic devices. Light triggered energy or electron transfer processes between the metal centres will take place within the supramolecular structure. The non-covalent structural organisation of the units to generate a supramolecular architecture plays a primary role for the function of the system in a similar way to biological light-harvesting and electron transfer systems.
