Membrane processes have revolutionized the way in which separations are carried out. Synthetic membranes for use in the process industries must have the correct physical properties for optimum performance. The crucial properties are, 1) the correct pore size distribution and surface morphology, 2) appropriate long-range electrostatic interactions with solutes, 3) minimum attachments of solutes to the membrane surface - ideally no fouling. The project will use an Atomic Force Microscope to determine these properties for a comprehensive range of membranes produced by a leading manufacturer. Such determination will involve an exploitation of advanced techniques developed on an existing EPSRC project. The results of characterization will be correlated with process behavior for a wide range of feeds of industrial interest using test-rig and pilot equipment. The insights gained will be used to develop new membranes with properties ideally matched to specified process objectives.
