Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme will entail developing a new pyroelectric ceramic composition with the properties outlined above. It is proposed to explore the exploitation of the polarisation step at the rhombohedral-rhombohedral transition in Zr rich PZT in a new way to attain an increased pyroelectric coefficient over a wide temperature range. This will entail the use of complex perovskite dopants, notably PMN, combined with A-site dopants such as La to obtain a broadening of the temperature range of the polarization step at this transition and an elimination of its thermal hysteresis. The use of Mn doping will be exploited to permit electrical resistivity control. The manufacturing process for the ceramic will be developed so that high quality wafers of the material can be produced at low cost. in particular it is proposed to use hot isostatic pressing and tape casting to obtain full density wafers.
