Summary on Grant Application Form
The group at Leicester has developed a unique facility capable of depositing mass-selected nanoscale magnetic clusters on substrates in ultra-high vacuum (UHV). This proposal seeks support to develop and install a sensitive magnetometer capable of measuring the magnetic behaviour of cluster assemblies while maintaining the UHV clean environment around the sample. This will enable, for the first time, measurement of the magnetic properties of exposed nanoscale particles supported on a surface. With cluster source and magnetometer we will embark on a research programme to measure the remanent and saturation magnetisation and the coercivity of cluster assemblies as a function of cluster size, average cluster separation and temperature. We will also investigate the changes induced by coating the particles with other materials. The programme will determine the blocking temperature as a function of cluster size and investigate the effect of inter-particle interactions including the exchange interaction. These measurements will be part of a coherent larger programme on clusters using magnetic dichroism measurements at synchrotron radiation sources (SRS and ESRF), structural studies using STM and other techniques used by our collaborators.
