Summary on Grant Application Form
Financial support is being sought to purchase a CDD array based imaging system for use in high voltage insulation research. The equipment will make available a highly sophisticated, cost effective and sensitive image capture system enabling the qualitiative and quantitative data acquisition of two distinct bun interlinked research projects. The programme is to (1) examine the pre-initiation of treeing in XLPE insulation containing localised defect centre using a light emission technique (ie. electro-luminescence) and (2) develop an electro-optical measurement method to visualise and quantify simultaneously the latent surface charge on polymers. The project which is novel, timely and important would benefit enormously from the equipment requested. Besides broadening and enhancing the capabilities of the group, new avenues of research would open up, attracting new funding and greater cooperation from UK industry.
