Summary on Grant Application Form
The equipment requested is that necessary to investigate the characteristics of advanced systems for the production of virtual acoustic images. It is possible, by using appropriate strategies for the digital processing of acoustic signals, to produce at the ears of a listener the signals that would be produced by a virtual source of sound at some prescribed spatial position. The signals may be presented to the listener's ears by either loudspeakers or by headphones. In each case, specific signal processing strategies must be adopted. It is the objective of the research to identify clearly the factors affecting the performance of such systems. Particular emphasis will be paid to the determination of those features of the head related transfer function (HRTF) of the listener which must be accounted for in order to produce successful operation of such systems.
