Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal addresses the question of how to induce self-pulsation in vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL's), building on the knowledge available from experience with edge-emitting self-pulsating laser diodes. The proposed research is in two parts: 1) to apply the theory of SPLD's using saturable absorbers to VCSEL structures, and 2) to assess the feasibility of a dispersively Q-switched VCSEL by the use of detuned Bragg stacks within the standard VCSEL structure. For item 1) the proposed research will be based on a semi-analytical large-signal model which has been developed from the PI for self-pulsation in laser diodes containing saturable absorbers. The effects on self-pulsation of microcavities and nonlinear gain and refraction in VCSEL's will be investigated, and the analytic model results will be compared with those from numerical simulation. For item 2) the theory will be extended to include dispersive feedback from an additional Bragg reflector which is grown on top of the usual VCSEL structure, and arranged to be detuned with respect to the other Bragg stacks. Tolerances and design issues for this technology will be assessed.
