The aim of this proposal is to fund a Bruker ESP300E Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectrometer to be used for defect and impurity characterisation of materials for large-area electronics. The work is to be carried out in collaboration with Bruker Spectrospin Ltd and will evaluate aspects of the instrumentation and develop methodology for characterisation defect content and concentration. The spectrometer will support current materials and device development projects at University of Dundee using amorphous silicon and its alloys, as well as microcrystalline silicon, for medical imaging, thin film transistor technology, solar cell applications, and novel field emission technology. These include collaboration with Phillips Research Laboratories and Intersolar Ltd. The instrument will form the bases of a proposed collaboration with University of Surrey developing CdTe for medical imaging applications and would also support a possible project to investigate defects and impurities in CdTe based solar cells development work with the UK industry. In addition the instrument is to used to characterise paramagnetic defects in tetrahedrally co-ordinated amorphous carbon materials to support work in progress to development for large area electronic applications at University of Cambridge.
