To rigorously investigate the applicability of optical reflectance spectroscopy to the measurement of skin oxygenation in normal and venous ulcerated subjects. To investigate the use of near-infrared spectroscopy to measure changes in skin water content caused by tissue oedema. To ascertain, using simulation studies, the likely depth discrimination of reflectance spectroscopy and to develop a rigorous multi-wavelength algorithm for tissue oxygen saturation measurements. To validate such an algorithm using phantom studies and to ascertain the variability of the technique in the clinical environment. If the results are favourable, to begin initial measurements on a limited sample of normal and venous ulcerated patients and hence to determine whether compression bandage treatments produce consistent improvement in tissues oxygenation.
