Current low cost multimode fibrelinks are limited in bandwidth.distance product to approximately 500 Mhz.km. In this project, we propose to develop low cost MMF links capable of greater than 10 times this performance using a novel form of sub-carrier multiplexing (SCM) using integrated VCSEL components and then extend this work into the area of SCM networks for distributing high bandwidth (>100 Mb/s) channels for computer and multimedia applications. Towards the end of the project WDM techniques using low cost components in combination with SCM, will be used to extend the aggregate data rates of the rates of the links to 100 Gb/s. The complementary expertise in device design and fabrication along with MMF link development at Bristol and in networking, modulation and coding at Essex will allow the development of a range of novel SCM techniques, e.g. adaptive frequency and wavelength channel allocation , as well as a new integrated amplifier/switch needed for later systems. The work will be extended to monomode fibre to allow increased bandwidths. The project will conclude with a full demonstrator of a digital TV studio distribution network developed in collaboration with NDS Ltd.
