Over the past six years, development at ISIS and SRS nave been at the forefront of a major breakthrough in techniques for high-pressure powder diffraction. The resulting new facilities at SRS yield data of unrivalled quality, and ISIS has a world-unique capacity for neutron diffraction to 10Gpa and above. This has opened up a new level of study in simple molecular solids at ISIS and in other fundamental systems like group IV, III-V, II-VI semiconductors at SRS. The proposed programme includes further major technique developments at both ISIS and SRS - temperature variation at high pressure, higher pressure, single crystal diffraction facilities, recording and analysis of powder diffraction in 2d, and modelling and control of sample microstructure - to be applied structural studies of ice and other simple molecular systems; hydroxides, hydrates and other H-bonded systems; boron-rich solids; magnetic systems; semi-conductors and related binary systems; alkali and alkaline-earth and other elemental metals; transition-metal chalcogenides; and silica and silicates. The programme is designed to meet the objectives of high-quality basic and applied research, advancement and dissemination of knowledge, training, meeting the needs of a range of direct beneficiaries, and contributing to the competitiveness of the UK.
