Synthesis techniques and the underlying mathematical framework straddles the grey area that exists between algorithms and architectures. This proposal seeks to develop new techniques for piecewise regular arrays based on so-called Iso-planes and pipestructures. These techniques are to be implemented and integrated into existing state-of-the-art design environments to enhance their capabilities, using mathematics and intermediate recurrence format developed under the SARACEN and REFLEX projects.The techniques will allow hierarchical design of higher dimensional arrays which are suited to fabrication in rapid prototyping of FPGAS. Such designs allow increased parallelism, realistic 3-D designs to cope with high band width design with limited resources, and scalability of application specific Architectures. The practical upshot is improved performance at lower clock speeds and thus less power consumption. Such designs are of key importance to the production of low cost information appliances and embedded systems.The techniques will be demonstrated by FPGA prototyping of arrays relevant to multimedia applications such as motion estimation and image compression algorithms.
