Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal related to the provision of a high repetition rate (50kHz) copper vapour laser equipment package. This will be used in conjunction with an existing Cordin drum camera for laser sheet Mie scatter imaging of developing turbulent flames and particle image velocimetry; with secondary use as light course and shutter for very high speed schlieren photography. Immediate appliations in existing projects include fundamental study of turbulent flame propagation in the Leeds fan-stirred bomb, study of the influence of bulk motions and turbulence on combustion in Leeds optically assessed engines, CFD code validation experiments in simple burners, study of end gas ignition in spark ignition engines and gas turbin combustor ignition probability. Speculative longer term applications include droplet imaging in bomb and engine studies, work in support of colleagues in the Leeds Cebtre for Combustion and Energy and the Mechanical Engineering Bioengineering Research Group.
