This application seeks funding to develop a new strategy in the synthesis organically-functionalized lamellar nanocomposites with 2:1 trioctahedral phyllosilicate structures. We will develop a direct straightforward synthesis procedure that is environmentally benign (low temperature, water-based), and which will produce a new class of covalently-linked organo-functionalized nanostructured based materials. Our focus will be directed to the synthesis, characterisation and reactivity of epoxy- and ethylene diamine functionalized magnesium phyllo(organo) silicates. We anticipate that these inorganic - organic hybrid materials will have uses in polymer-clay composites, metal-ion extraction and as fillers in a range of applications. The synthesis of such materials should also open up new avenues for organometallic chemistry, catalysis and organic and inorganic host-guest chemistry.
