Techniques for writing structures in the sub-micron regime are assuming increasing importance in many aspects of technology. Atoms can now be cooled and manipulated with exquisite resolution. This capability offers for the first time the prospect of forming arbitrary nanostructures with a range of elements. In this proposal we seek funds to establish a research programme to investigate new methods of atomic beam writing using an atomic funnel to create a beam of atoms, cooled in the transverse and longitudinal directions. We shall use this to explore the possibility of the use of a light lens to provide atomic focusing with sub-micron resolution. The success of Direct deposition of atoms gets around the fundamental limitation is set by the wavelength of the light used in optical lithographic processes. The equivalent diffraction limit is set by the much smaller de Broglie wavelength of the atoms. Structures of order a few tens of nanometers can be written directly on substrates and can either be the final product.
