Summary on Grant Application Form
Arrays of nanoscale particles of semi-conductors (Me; M = Zn; Cd; E = S, Se) within polymer films will be synthesised from the reaction of Me2M with H2E in the presence of polymeric Lewis bases. The polymer will be used to control the size and size distribution of the particles as well as acting as a support for them. The Polymeric Lewis bases will contain pendant -CH2PR2 or -CH2P(X)R2, X = 0, S or Se functionality. Unlike pyridine containing polymers, such basic groups will not quench the emission from the particles, so that photo and electroluminescent materials will be prepared. The colour of the luminescence will be tuned by varying the size of the nanoscale particles.
