Sludge is one of the end products of wastewater treatment processes, and can originate from a number of different sources. Large volumes of sludge are produced, that have a low solids content (0.25 to 12%), and the use of dewatering is necessary prior to final transport and disponsal.The pressures of the future use of incineration will impose higher costs on this process, and therefore, any options that can be applied to reduce dewatering costs, by making the operation more efficient, will be welcomed by sludge producing companies.This programme aims to study the effect of the stucture and composition of ECP produced by bacteria in the sludges, and to relate this knowledge to the sludge dewaretability characteristics. This work will then be expanded by manipulating the properties of the ECP in activated and anaerobic sludges to gain an understanding of how these external factors affect the dewaterability, through their affect on ECP characteristics. This will aim to produce a sludge that is easier to dewater. A final set of guidelines to optimise and economise the dewatering process will be described.
