Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will combine comprehensive ultrashort pulse studies of semiconductor optical amplifiers on picosecond and femtosecond timescales with optimisation of devices fabricated and tested in all-optical systems demonstrations at British Telecom Research Laboratories. The ultimate limits imposed on ultrafast switching by spectral hole burning will be determined; a comparison of bulk and multiple quantum well amplifiers made to establish carrier transport aspects for ultrafast amplifer design; the relative contributions of phase and amplitude modulation established using dual wavelength techniques and the effect of a cw optical bias beam on all of these mechanisms with the aim of establishing the criteria and then implementing SOA's in all-optical communications systems.
