Summary on Grant Application Form
Optical fibre technology offers exciting possibilities for a new generation of high performance, distributed fibre sensors. Our proposal is as follows. Firstly we propose to investigate techniques for the fabrication of long fibre grating arrays for sensing applications. We will concentrate on the fabrication of arrays with suitable characteristics for use within distributed temperature and acoustic sensors for the oil industry where enormous economic and environmental benefits can be derived for the UK. We will work both on the development of the arrays themselves and also on the development of the required protective and sensitising coatings. Secondly we propose to develop a high power, low-coherence, wavelength swept erbium fibre laser for grating array interrogation purposes. Finally, we will integrate the fabricated arrays with the highpower source and will develop novel wavelength swept distributed sensor interrogation systems. Full system trials of integrated temperature and acoustic sensors are to be performed in collaboration with a local company, Sensor Dynamics, who have a proven track record in optical sensor systems for the oil industry. Southampton University has groups of proven expertise in all the key technological areas required for this project and is uniquely positioned to conduct this important work within the UK.
