Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to significantly extend the use of Raman microscopy (operating at 780 nm and combined with a fibre optic remote probe) to study industrially important processes and environments. In collaboration with HSL, Sheffield, we use Raman methods for cost-effective monitoring of very small fibres and other particles in 'work place' environments to drive health and safety-related improvements essential to meet modern legalisation. This work will include the study of surfactant absorption onto asbestos fibres in connection (and for correlation) with the control of hazardous dust in the construction industry. In Collaboration with Renishaw transducers we will use Raman microscopy to aid the design, deposition and use of PVD ceramic hard coatings on metal and/or polymeric substrates. This work will involve the use of crystalline TiAIXN phonon spectra to monitor oxidation, degradation and wear as a wear as a function of stress during the use of such coatings on cutting tools and in other industrially aggressive environments. In both cases the use of an optical fibre probe will be developed to examine surfaces and coatings for 'in field' monitoring purposes.
