The principal objectives of the project are the following:(i) To develop a generally applicable computational strategy that permits the solution of industrially relevant problems involving finite/discrete elements. This will involve the integration of several research areas in numerical methods research, including discrete element methodology, granular dynamics, frictional contact interaction, material damage/fracture, finite strain material deformation and adaptive mesh refinement.(ii) To implement the computational model on parallel platforms. A generic approach will be undertaken in that most commonly available parallel machines will be considered, which will be made possible through use of a porting library specially developed by the proposers. However, emphasis will be placed on the use of low cost workstation equipment, in order to bring the methodology within the reach of a wider range of users; particularly SMEs.In this way, a computational tool will be provided capable of solving large scale (circa 0.5 million dof) industrially relevant problems in a range of engineering and scientific disciplines. The methodology developed will be employed both within externally funded research projects and EPSRC projects which have several UK companies as industrial partners. The equipment will be also utilised in collaborative research with other university departments identified in the proposal.
