The provision of ultramicrotomy facilities is requested to enhance the multidisciplinary studies in the Corrosion and Protection Centre, with a current major focus on the corrosion and filming behaviour of aluminium and its alloys for applications in architecture, aerospace, automative, electronic, lithography, packaging etc. The new facility will enable the research to continue to make precise use of the increasing sophisticated in transmission electron microscopy, thereby enhancing the development of materials structure/performance properties in many application areas. Additionally, the facility will encourage the already wide collaboration with institutions and industry, with two-way technology transfer, and training of research workers. The facility will support the following key areas of activity: thermochemical processing, surface pre-treatment, surface treatment, assisted by novel, complementary use of TEM and AFM, and new materials based on self-organised porous anodic films. The key success in these areas is the generation of ultramicrotomed sections of controlled thickness, from precise locations, thereby allowing relationships between the alloy substrate and its films, and interfaces within the film, to be probed by electron beams, with additional EDX, EELS and energy filtering approaches. The research will assist enhanced performance of lightweight materials, with engineered coatings, and is consistent with many Foresight Priorities.
