This programme concerns a novel fabrication process for electronics, in which a lithographic printing press can be used to deposit conductive, resistive and dielectric inks onto a range of flexible substrates. In comparison with standard offset lithographic printing, present methods of electronic fabrication and assembly are costly, and not scalable for very high volumes of production.The aim of this programme is to generate an understanding of conductive lithographic films, and their applications to electronics manufacturing. The principal objectives are to characterise and optimise conductive lithographic films for use in low cost electronics interconnect and microwave applications. This will involve optimising the existing Lithographic Conductive Ink to further improve conductivity, studying component attachment to lithographic films and investigating the behaviour of microwave structures fabricated by lithographic printing.The use of conductive lithographic films for seeding plating processes will be studied and the electrical, mechanical and thermal properties and the environmental performance of a range of inks, substrates and adhesives will be characterised.
