Summary on Grant Application Form
The flame retardance of poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene, two important commercial thermoplastics, will be improved by the chemical incorporation of groups containing phosphorus and silicon. These modifications will be accomplished by using appropriately functionalised comonomers and or initiators. The flame retardance of the polymers will be quantified by a variety of small and large scale tests and will be compared with those of the unmodified polymers. Smoke emissions will also be measured. The mechanisms of flame retardance (i.e. whether condensed phase and/or gas phase) will be elucidated through analysis of chars, and of the fuel components and gaseous combustion products using laser pyrolysis time-of-flight mass spectrometry, a Purser furnace and a direct flame sampling technique. Physical and mechanical properties of the modified polymers will be compare with those of the unmodified forms. The overall aim of the work is to make progress towards effective reactive flame retardant strategies capable of being applied to a wide range of chain reaction polymers without detriment to physicals, mechanical and general chemical properties.
