Summary on Grant Application Form
The Graphics Research Group at Cambridge's Computer Laboratory has a pressing need for new equipment to support its research work in two areas: 3D displays and 3D modelling. In the former, the group works on the image generation and image compression algorithms that are required for 3D display technology to become widely used. In the latter area, the group is investigating the management and generation of large 3D models. The two areas are linked by a common interest in making images, conventional or 3D, from 3D models; and by the potential of 3D display as the user-interface for the interactive manipulation of 3D models. This work is supervised by the principal applicant, the lecturer in computer graphics at the Laboratory. He has extensive experience in 3D displays, image processing, and 3D modelling. The package of equipment proposed in this application is vital to allow the group to continue with its world-class research in these areas. The package has been constructed with careful consideration of existing facilities and the needs of both the research and researchers. It represents excellent value for money. 86,033 has been committed in cash and discounts. We are asking the EPSRC to provide a further 74,386.
