The IRC in Materials for High Performance Applications currently operates a dual purpose melting facility which can be configured either as a Plasma-Arc Cold-Hearth Remelting (PACHR) unit for the clean processing of advanced alloys, or as a Cold-Wall Induction Bottom-Pour (CWI-BP) system which can be used as a source of clean liquid metal for use in investment casting, powder production by gas and centrifugal atomisation, and net-shape processing by spray forming. The techno-economic benefits which can accrue from these processing routes are well established. There is, however, a growing need to further develop fundamental scientific and technical understanding if these processing routes are to attain commercial vibility. In the face of escalating demands for PACHR and CWI-BP processed materials, the IRC, supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), is currently investing in a dedicated 'stand-alone' vacuum melting facility which will incorporate, and interface with, existing cold-induction melting, atomisation and spray forming equipment. This facility will be housed in a new laboratory which will be dedicated to the net-shape processing of materials. The current proposal seeks additional support for the procurement of 'ceramic tilt-pour induction melting equipment', both to enhance and increase the flexibility of the melting operation, and to give a greater level of control over the pouring process.
