Summary on Grant Application Form
Gas Chromatography (GC) Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS) is an analytical tool used to separate, identify, and define the stable isotopic composition of individual compounds. The objective of this JREI proposal is to fund dedicated GC-IRMS equipment at the QUESTOR Centre, additionally with support for a 1-year post Doctoral Research Assistant funded by QUB. For this dedicated GC-IRMS system we are requesting 43.6% funding from the JREL. Research in the QUESTOR Centre (7 Departments and 21 Industrial Partners) along with the departments of Geology and Archeology at QUB have a need for GC-IRMS analyses on samples which have very short shelf lives and can not be transported (thus, these projects are unable to make use of facilities in England). The goal of the proposed equipment is to locally support this and future research which is of both scientific and industrial interest. Existing IRMS equipment at the Queen's University of Belfast is primarily used in dual-inlet mode and is now used at capacity; leaving no time for potential GC-IRMS applications.
