The LabRam spectrometer is required both for a diverse range of on-going and new innovative research programmes of the Materials Group in the School of Chemical Life Sciences at the University of Greenwich. It will be used principally to analyse and characterise samples of both academic and industrial importance including phosphor glasses, pharmaceuticals, biopolymers (including heme proteins), model heme compounds and electrocatalytic surfaces. To a lesser extent it will be used on less mainstream projects including paintings/painting pigments, silicate membranes, diamond like carbon films coated onto filaments and metallo-phthalocyanine films. More specifically, the luminescence from novel upconversion (anto-Stokes emission) of phosphor glasses will be examined in depth in order to elucidate the processes involved and to aid material optimisation for industrial uses. Spectra obtained from model heme complexes will greatly strengthen our understanding of the factors (e.g. molecular geometry/ligand substitution on the iron) which control the reactivity of heme iron in proteins. Raman spectroscopic data obtained from peptides/proteins of biochemical importance and pharmaceutical/biotechnological significance will greatly enhance our understanding of their structure and solution behaviour as well as their interaction with ligands.
