Summary on Grant Application Form
There is immense interest in the use of electro-optical signal processing for telecommunication. Poled polymer films are very promising candidates for EO device applications as they combine large electro-optic coefficients, low dielectric constants and flexible processibility. However one of the big problems with these materials is that their thermal stability is relatively poor. Our proposal seeks to develop further a new class of EO devices. These polymers have the potential of large EO under GR/J76941, for use in EO devices. These polymers have the potential of large EO response, high thermal stability, and flexibility in controlling the nonlinearity and polymer properties. The work will involve the synthesis of gram quantities of the known polymers, model oligomers, and new (co) polymers; optimisation of the polymer poling conditions and measurements of their EO response and thermal stability; incorporation into waveguide structures.
