Summary on Grant Application Form
We will undertake a programme to develop an efficient light-emitting device (LED), emitting at 1.5 microns, in silicon, based on beta-iron disilicide. This will capitalise on our previous work on the fabrication and physics of beta iron disilicide produced at Surrey using ion beam synthesis. Our recent production of a working device is an important demonstration of the feasibility of our approach and the compatibility of the synthesis with conventional silicon processing makes this an attractive route forward to all silicon optical systems. A final objective of the programme will be to produce a demonstrator injection laser in this system.
