The equipment for which we are seeking funds consists of a Differential Scanning Calorimeter and a Windowed cell Extraction Unit with optical facilities.The Differential Scanning Calorimeter will accelerate existing work and facilitate planned additional work in the field of powder production and characterisation. This unit will be of value not only to the Near-critical Extraction Group but also to the Solid Processing Group in the School. This equipment will be used for measuring heats of melting and melting points, identifiaction of hydrated states of crytals; purity of crystals and identifiaction of polymorphism. These measurements are critical in the characterisation of pharmaceutical materials which we are producing, since any changes in the physical properties of drugstuffs ultimately dictates dosage and therapeutic activity.The windowed cell will be used for several purposes: 1) Visual assessment of the phase behaviour of organic solids (including pharmaceuticals) contacted with compressed CO(2): 2) Extraction of fermentation broths and other systems combined with visual studies of the gas-liquid contacting involved (the broths contain metabolites of therapeutic interest). This work is to carried out to obtain a better understanding of the mass transfer mechanism and the optimisation of the mass transfer rate by suitable modifications to extraction conditions and equipment internals.
