The aim of the programme is to study pool fires in the context of building fire safety by using a combination of numerical and experimental methods. The intention is to advance the techniques for building fire prediction which share many similar characteristics to pool fire. It is planned to address the turbulence modelling problems associated with the near field persistent flame zone immediately above the pool surface. Two approaches will be used for this purpose. The first approach is a second-moment closure model consisting of four transport equations and the second approach is the multi-fluid models of turbulence which describes turbulent flow via probablility-density functions . Investigations will also be carried out on the effect of turbulent fluctuations upon the mean radiative fluxes. SOFIE, an International Benchmark CFD model being developed by the fire community, will be used as the basic framework of the numerical study.Measurements will be made on gas temperature, soot concentration and thermal radiation for three liquid fuels, i.e. heptane, methyl methacrylate and kerosine using optical and probing techniques.Finally the CFD models will be validated against both existing experimental data and the new data to be generated in the proposed study.
