Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed study will investigate the long-term conditions around an old London Underground tunnel in London Clay. Earth pressures, pore water pressures and soil permeability will be measured at different distances in the ground around the tunnel. the pore water pressures will be measured with piezometers and the in-situ permeability by self-boring permeameter testing. The in-situ stress condition will be measured by a self-boring load cell device. High quality samples will also be obtained for laboratory testing. Using the data generated from the investigation, the study aims to evaluate the behaviour of the ground and the tunnel lining in the long-term and to assess the implications for current tunnel design methods.
