Summary on Grant Application Form
Frustrated pyrochlore lattice magnets form one of the most subjects of current research in magnetism, and challenge our general understanding of collective behaviour. In particular they show spin glass behaviour in site-ordered systems, contrary to theoretical expectations. Progress in this field has been hampered by a lack of good model materials, which are appropriate for single crystal neutron scattering investigations. We have recently shown that the rare earth titanate pylochlores are ideal for this purpose. We now propose a thorough physical investigation of this series. We will investigate the magnetic ordering and dynamics of the series using crystal neutron scattering at ISIS, Riscoe, and the Hahn-Meitner Institute, in order to determine the nature of the low-temperature state. Using powder neutron diffraction, muon spin resonance and heat capacity and magnetisation measurements, we will investigate (in a carefully controlled manner) the effect that chemical disorder, single-ion anisotropy and crystal symmetry have on this state. The results will provide valuable information on: 1. How spin glass phases can form in chemically-pure materials and 2. How geometric frustration can be controlled.
