Summary on Grant Application Form
We will use Hertzian indentation to probe the surface of brittle plasma ceramic coatings for defects. Large defects present at the interface between the ceramic and the substrate will also be probed. The use of the technique to characterise coating toughness and residual stress state will be investigated. With thin coatings the technique will be more sensitive to interface defects and the analysis of the Hertzian stress field will be extended to coated systems in order to distinguish between defect types. A preliminary study of a related delamination test will be begun.
