Most of the research undertaken on adhesive joints makes extensive use of finite element analysis. However, the material models available do not accurately represent all of the following characteristics of adhesive behaviour: logarithmic rate dependency, hydrostatic stress sensitivity, non-constant volume non-linear deformation with significant recovery and a state dependant elastic modulus. In this research programme a new constitutive model based on an overstress approach, that accurately predicts all of these behavioural characteristics, will be developed, implemented as a user material in a commercial finite element code, documented and placed in the public domain. The programme will be divided into five work packages covering the following areas: Collating existing experimental data and determining a number of material behaviour metrics; establishing methods for the calculating model parameters, the generation of predicted material behaviour for a number of existing material models; the formulation of the new model; and the implementation and validation of the new material model. The majority (60o/o) of the programme will focus on the last two work packages. No experimental work will be undertaken as part of this programme as the required material data has already been generated.
