Summary on Grant Application Form
The essential core of this proposal is the monitoring and modeling of river floods at the field scale, at four sites in the UK looking specifically at overbank flows. The work follows directly from the EPSRC Flood channels program centered at the FCF, HR Wallingford. The program will collect extensive field data at all sites with a view to comparing with Flood Channel Facility data and for comparing with three-dimensional models, as well as with a two-dimensional inundation fuzzy rules model. This will be a cross-disciplinary team effort with the flood monitoring rapid monitoring response team based in Lancaster and the numerical modeling part centered in Glasgow. The work will also benefit form practical support from HR Wallingford. The results of the work will establish scaling rules from model to field for overbank flows, will produce industry standard software for modeling such flows and will also provide guidelines of floodplain behavior, vegetation and topography.
